Investigators searching for gunman who shot 2 people in Brockton

BROCKTON, Mass. - Brockton Police are investigating after a fatal shooting killed one person and injured another at a convenience store parking lot.

Mayor Bill Carpenter was at the scene Saturday night and confirmed that police were investigating and collecting evidence from the Brockton Mini Mart parking lot.

Mayor Carpenter told Boston 25 News that the city's shot spotter system activated at 10:15 p.m. showing gunfire at Spring St. and Pleasant St.

"I heard like 10 to 15 shots, when I came there was people running and a car just taking off, after that the cops started coming over and it was crazy," said Tony Barros, who lives in the area.

Officials who responded to the scene found a car in the parking lot with two gunshot victims inside. One man was pronounced dead at the scene while the other victim was transported to Boston Medical Center.

The Plymouth District Attorney has identified the victim who was killed as 26-year-old Bethgy Cator of Avon.

"It’s heartbreaking, especially for the families, you think about a mother burying her child that’s so young," said Mary Hill. "It’s just a waste, their lives, they don’t even begin to start it, and it’s over, it’s sad."

While neighbors say the violence in Brockton isn't surprising, they say it has to stop.

Tony Barros, who heard the shots fired on Saturday night, says it hasn't been easy raising young kids in the area. He's hoping police will catch whoever's responsible for the shooting.

"My sister lives right there and she's got three kids, and once in a while they duck in the house when something happens, because you know every time they hear shots they have to duck," said Barros.

Little information has been released on this case, but the Brockton Fire Department tweeted out last night that they were responding to a medical emergency with multiple victims.

This is the third homicide this year for the city of Brockton.

Massachusetts State Police is assisting Brockton Police with the investigation.
