Brockton Police cracking down on dirt bikes, ATVs

BROCKTON, Mass. — Brockton residents say they’re sick of the noise, the chaos and close calls with dirt bikes and ATVs across the city.

“It’s gone on way too long,” said Mary Knudson of Brockton.

Brockton City Councilor Winthrop Farwell Jr. posted a video sent to him by a retired Brockton Police officer on the Facebook. It showed dozens of dirt bikes and ATVs flying down a Brockton Street; and residents are fed up.

“Oh, I’ve seen crazy stuff […] like people doing wheelies, and all around Main Street, they don’t care,” said Danny Duro of Brockton.

Now, Brockton Police are cracking down and confiscating those bikes all in an effort to stop what they call reckless behavior.

“You should see these kids just driving them around the streets. Eventually they’re going to either get killed or kill somebody else,” Knudson said.

Councilor Farwell agreed, saying the dirt bike riders take over roads and wreak havoc on Brockton’s streets.

“I don’t want to see a kid get hurt. I don’t want to see a motorcycle fatality because 25, 50 or 100 kids, young adults are motoring down the highway, on city streets, sometimes on the wrong side of the street,” Farwell said.

Residents told Boston 25 the police crackdown is long overdue but welcome news after living with the sights, sounds and chaos created by the people behind the wheels of those dirt bikes and ATVs.

“They’ve got their hands full around here, but I am glad they’re going to start putting their foot down,” Knudson said.
