WESTPORT, Mass. — A 10-year-old was killed, and several others were hurt after an early morning three-car crash in Westport on Sunday, according to a release by the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office.
Shortly after 2 a.m., Westport Police received numerous frantic 911 calls about the car accident at Route 6 in the area of the Route 88 interchange, the release said.
Westport, Dartmouth and Fall River fire departments responded to the scene.
The 10-year-old girl, identified on Monday morning as Anilda Riberio, and her 9-year-old sister suffered the most serious injuries, the release stated.
Riberio was pronounced dead at St. Anne’s Hospital in Fall River while her sister is in serious condition at Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence.
A preliminary investigation shows that a 29-year-old New Bedford woman was driving a white Subaru WRX when she made minor contact with the rear end of a Toyota Tundra, driven by a 43-year-old New Bedford woman.
The people in both cars were driving back to New Bedford from a party.
Both cars stopped in the left travel lane to assess the damage before agreeing to sort it out later, the release stated. As both cars started to leave, a Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Robert Silvia, 29, of Fall River, slammed into the rear of the Subaru, pushing it into the Tundra.
Riberio and her sister were apparently sitting in the rear seat of the Subaru at the time, according to the release.
Silvia was given a citation by Westport Police for motor vehicle homicide by negligent operation of a motor vehicle. The DA’s office said he will be summoned into Fall River District Court for a clerk magistrate’s hearing at a later date. A clerk will then determine if probable cause exists to formally charge Silvia with the crime of motor vehicle homicide by negligent operation of a motor vehicle.
The crash is under investigation by Massachusetts State Police detectives and Westport Police.
Correction: We originally reported that a 9-year-old girl died from the crash, per Westport Police. The DA’s Office reported later that it was a 10-year-old girl who was killed.
