Jury finds Philip Chism guilty of murdering Colleen ritzer

SALEM, Mass. — Philip Chism, now 16 years old, was convicted of murdering his Danvers High School math teacher on Oct. 22, 2013 when he was 14.

The charges against Chism included murder, 2 counts of aggravated rape and armed robbery.

He was found guilty on all charges except one of the aggravated rape charges.

Just before the verdict was announced jurors asked the judge about the aggravated rape he was charged the found him not guilty on. Their question revolved around the time of Ritzer's death in regards to the accused rape.

Chism could be sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole in 15 to 25 years for the murder conviction.

The other convictions against Chism also carry a sentence of up to life with the possibility of parole.

The judge will sentence Chism at an undecided date in the future.

FOX25's Bob Ward was in the courtroom for the entire trial and said when the verdict was read the courtroom remained calm with no outbursts.

Chism's math teacher Colleen Ritzer was 24 when she was killed by Chism. A memorial scholarship has been set up in her honor.

She was remembered as an upbeat person by all accounts and said in one of her final tweets"Every day may not be good, but there is some good in every day."

The trial began with jury selection on Oct. 6 and closing arguments happened Monday, Dec. 14.

The jury deliberated for one and a half days before reaching their verdict.
