BRAINTREE, Mass. — Braintree is getting ready to honor the bravery of five of its police officers after an officer-involved shooting at the Motel 6 back in May.
Chief Paul Shastany said his officers had no idea they were going to come under fire when they knocked on a motel door to serve a warrant. He said what happened after will help save other officers lives.
“It was textbook, and it's amazing to watch and to know what they did. It's remarkable,” he said.
The DA's office cleared the officers of any criminal wrongdoing last month said the officers knocked and announced who they were before Tizaya Robinson started shooting at them. The officers were there to arrest Robinson on a warrant out of Boston.
On the Motel 6 surveillance camera you see Donald Delaney get hit and go down, and then a fellow officer radioing for help and pulling Delaney behind cover.
After being shot in the face, the chief says Delaney still managed to get back on his feet and fire back.
“He’s like an iron man,” said Shastany.
Robinson was killed by one of the bullets an officer shot; the medical examiner said it was impossible to determine what officer shot it. He also suffered a self-inflicted gunshot
While the DA has ruled in the officers' favor, the chief's internal investigation is ongoing, though nearly complete.
The internal investigation is not only to make sure procedure was followed, but also to evaluate if they need to do anything differently to better protect officers.
“We take an incident like this and will analyze it and we may train off of this,” he said.
Officer Delaney temporarily lost vision but has regained it. All five officers are planning to return to work soon.
"I was very proud. They are heroes,” said Shastany.
The Chief says the officers will likely receive additional commendations by the law enforcement community.
