BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A Boston street sweeper was allegedly driving drunk Friday and it was all caught on tape. The incident happened in broad daylight at about 9:30 a.m. in a neighborhood full of families.
The street sweeper is facing charges after his joy ride left tire marks on the ground and knocked a fire hydrant over. FOX 25 obtained the video that caught the entire wild ride on camera.
FOX25 crews rushed to the scene and captured the moments police arrested 42-year-old Steve Schallmo.
We asked Boston's mayor about the man hired to clean city streets.
"It's a private contractor that we bring on to help sweep the streets and we are gonna do further investigation on it," Mayor Marty Walsh said. "We also went to American Sweeping, the Dorchester company where we learned he works, but they declined to comment.
Back at the damaged neighborhood, residents are still reeling over what happened.
"It's scary and I think irresponsible because their supposed to be here to clean up the neighborhood not destroy it," one resident said.
Schallmo is charged with operating under the influence and leaving the scene with property damage. FOX25 also learned, from the Suffolk County District Attorney's office, that he's facing other charges of assault and battery for a separate incident.
