Boston hotel resolves issue with city to save "Yappier Hour"

BOSTON — A dog-friendly happy hour at The Liberty Hotel in Boston has been saved, according to the tweet from the hotel and a spokesperson for Boston Mayor Marty Walsh’s office.

Since 2008, the dog-friendly hotel has hosted a weekly summer event dubbed "Yappier Hour" - a canine spin on happy hour. Dog owners sip cocktails and converse while their pooches socialize in The Yard, the hotel’s enclosed courtyard.

The Liberty Hotel posted on Twitter Monday evening that Yappier Hour had been canceled because, “The City of Boston is concerned with serving drinks while there are dogs present.”

According to the Boston Inspectional Services Department, The Liberty Hotel applied for and received a variance last year allowing dogs to be presented while food was being eaten at the Yappier Hour event. The hotel didn’t apply for the same variance this year, but started advertising for Yappier Hour.

The Boston Inspectional Services Department met with hotel Tuesday afternoon to help the hotel received the approvals necessary. A spokesperson for the mayor’s office followed up with Boston 25 News when the meeting concluded to report a health variance will be issued so the hotel can continue with Yappier Hour events.
