Boston FD recruits rescue chickens

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Boston Fire Department recruits and three Dedham firefighters helped rescue 17 chickens Friday.

Recruits from the Fire Academy on Moon Island walked across the Long Island Bridge, which was closed to cars, to rescue the stranded chickens.

The island was evacuated Wednesday after the mayor decided the bridge was not safe for cars. Employees and homeless people at a shelter were evacuated, but not the birds.

The owner of the birds called the Boston Fire Department for assistance and with the help of the Animal Rescue League of Boston the recruits walked across the bridge, put the chickens in cages and transported them They will now live at a farm in Dedham.
