Boston braces for first freezing temperatures of the season

BOSTON — We all knew it was coming, at one point or another.

We'd joke with friends as we enjoyed our sweltering hot beach days, mention it in passing as we placed out A/C units in the window and even made comments as we sat in our backyards enjoying the end of the summer.

Winter is coming, but not quite yet.

“It’s really cold, the wind sucks," said Roza Novikov. "This is why I want to move to California."

However, the first freezing temperatures of the season are upon us, and with that, so are all our blankets, comforters and any possible layers we have available.

It almost seems as though we skipped fall and went straight through to winter, where once people were wearing ripped jeans and leather jackets, they are now donning hats, coats and gloves, leaving no open space for the cold to cut through.

“It’s too up and down, one day it’s 60, one day it’s 40 - it’s just too much," said Novikov. "I got this at TJ Maxx just to survive the cold just because it was so windy, I didn’t think I’d make it back through Boston Common."

From heavy coats to hats, gloves, scarfs and an assortment of other creative layering looks, there’s a visible trend joining the bitterness in the air.

"I’m ready, I’m always ready!" said Sharon Dias. "The minute the temperature drops to 40 I’m ready - scarves, hat, the whole nine yards. Mother nature could you be kind to us?"

Dias braces for the cold as other commuters around her, but often finds herself entertained by those who simply cannot adapt to the extreme temperatures.

"They say, 'Oh god it’s cold,' I say, 'It’s not as cold as it’s going to get,'" said Dias.
