BROCKTON, Mass. — An 8-year-old boy is recovering at home after a giant light pole fell on top of him.

Lamont Collins, who attends Downey Elementary School in Brockton, was at recess with his friends when the pole fell on him. He said he tried to run for it before the pole fell, but it was too late. He said he was so scared and thought he was going to die.

“The pole came down on my back,” Lamont said. “I was leaning on the pole, in the school. Looked up and it came down on my back.”

“He said all he knows is when he hit the ground, all of his friends came running trying to help him and get the pole off of him,” Lamont’s mother Melissa Rivera said.

Rivera said it took five adults to get the rusted-looking pole off of her son.

“The pole fell on him...what if it hit him in the head. He could've lost his life. If it hit him any harder in the back he could've broke his back,” she said.

Doctors told Lamont he has internal bruising on his back.

“It feels like a little bump. It feels a little hard,” he said. “They told me if I run a lot it can bleed inside of me.”

FOX25 reached out to city and school officials Wednesday afternoon, but there has been no response.

Crews will begin taking down light polls at the school Thursday.
