3-alarm overnight fire rips through Wareham historic church

WAREHAM, Mass. — Wareham firefighters battled a 3-alarm fire at the Saint Patrick Church overnight Friday into Saturday.

At around 1:00 a.m., firefighters responded to the fire at 88 High Street, where smoke could be seen coming from the roof and fire was showing inside the structure from the front.

The was heavy fire damage to the organ/choir area of the church and excessive heat and smoke damage to the rest of the structure.

No one was inside the church at the time of the fire.

Mutual aid was provided by Wareham Police, Wareham EMS, Onset Fire, Carver Fire, Marion Fire, Rochester Fire, Bourne Fire, DFS Special Operations & the Providence Canteen.

In total, 5 engines, four ladders and eight other vehicles responded to the fire.

The fire was knocked down by 5:00 a.m. and crews worked all morning to vent the building and check for extension and damages to the building.

Firefighters estimate about $500,000 in damages to the building.

The cause of the fire has not been identified yet.
