Skateboarder fatally struck by truck in Haverhill

HAVERHILL, Mass. - A skateboarder was fatally struck in Haverhill by a truck early Saturday morning, according to Essex County District Attorney Jonathan W. Blodgett.

Police identified the man as Efrain Alejandro Gonzalez-Zamora, 27, of Haverhill.

Gonzalez-Zamora was struck around 3:30 a.m. on Saturday morning on River Street. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the district attorney.

Authorities say the man was on a skateboard on River Street when he was hit by a Salisbury man driving a rental truck, a Ryder Freightliner, weighing about 26,000 pounds.

Neighbors say they rushed outside after the accident happened.

"The bang was so loud I thought it was two cars hitting [because] it was so loud," said Bryan Connor, a neighbor.

“He got hit so hard that the skateboard was in pieces and there was a sock in front of our mailbox and a shoe was over here," said Tracy Smith.

Distraught residents tried to help Gonzalez-Zamora, but it was already too late.

Police say the driver stopped after the crash, and so far he has not been charged nor have any citations been issued.

Family visiting the accident site later told Boston 25 News that the victim had just left work at a nearby restaurant when he was hit.

Police are investigating the incident.
