MANSFIELD, Mass. — Two people were killed Wednesday in an early morning crash on 495 southbound.
The two-car, head-on crash happened around 2 a.m. just after exit 13 A.
Investigators believe a 2014 Nissan Sentra driven by a 24-year-old woman from Middleborough was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of 495. Police said there was almost one one on the road, but the Sentra struck head-on a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze being driven by a 27-year-old man from Taunton. Both drivers died.
The names of the victims have been withheld but friends identify the Tauton man as Adam Santos.
Santos is being remembered as a hard-working and caring man.
FOX25's Cyrstal Haynes spoke with a woman who said her boyfriend was in the Chevrolet Cruze. She said that one of his last texts was to her as he was getting ready to get off of work saying he was on his way home.
Only the breakdown lane was open to traffic following the crash.
The victims' identities have not yet been released.
According to an NTSB investigation, 300 to 400 people are killed in wrong way driving accidents in the U.S. every year. More than half involve alcohol and the overwhelming majority of wrong way crashed happen between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.
