14 displaced after triple-decker fire in Mattapan

BOSTON — An investigation is underway in Mattapan after a fire at a triple-decker late Sunday night.

One firefighter was injured and 14 people were displaced after the fire broke out on the second and third floors of the Evelyn Street home after 11 p.m.

One firefighter was taken to a hospital to be treated for a shoulder injury, but is expected to recover.

Georgia Richards said she realized she and her 17-year-old son had to run.

"I'm right on top of the room that was burning," she said. "My son was sleeping. All I could do was just run and get him."

Everyone was able to get out of the burning home safely.

"I went through the front door and it was all smoke," Richards said. "I don't know what to do. I went to the back. It was all smoke but I make it down anyway."

The American Red Cross is assisting those who were affected.

"It's crazy," Richards said. "Sometimes you see it happen and it happens to you."

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
