Renewed effort to suspend the gas tax

BOSTON — A group of Republican state lawmakers will once again push for suspension of the state’s 24 cent gas tax. A news conference is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the statehouse hosted by proponents of the measure.

Earlier this month a similar effort failed. Governor Charlie Baker sided with Democrats and also said he favors a $700 million package of tax cuts.

There may be movement on the issue within the walls of the statehouse with debate scheduled on a mid-year spending bill.

One amendment filed by Sutton Republican Ryan Fattman would pause tax gas collections through September 5th.

Maryland and Georgia were the first states to suspend their respective gas taxes, though Connecticut is considering it, and New Hampshire’s governor has asked lawmakers in the Granite State to do the same.
