Jason Groome, the Red Sox top ranked pitching prospect, and 12th overall pick in the 2016 draft will have season-ending Tommy John surgery next week. The procedure will be performed on Tuesday, May 15 by Dr. Neal El Attrache at the Kerlan-Jobe Institute in Los Angeles, CA.
Jay Groome has yet to pitch this season, and with a 15-18 month recovery time may not pitch again until the 2020 season.
Groome was considered to be an elite prospect out of high school and was viewed as the potential first overall pick in 2016 before falling to the Red Sox at 12 because of concerns about him going to college. The Sox gave him a $3.65 million signing bonus, the largest the club had ever given to a drafted player.
