Dave Dombrowski hired by Red Sox as head of baseball operations

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com/AP) -- Dave Dombrowski, formerly with the Detroit Tigers, was hired by the Boston Red Sox Tuesday to be their new president.

Dombrowski will assume responsibility for all baseball operations matters, and the change is effective immediately.

The Red Sox also said general manager Ben Cherington is leaving the club, two years after building the 2013 World Series champions. He apparently declined the opportunity to continue as GM.

Larry Lucchino announced earlier this month that he would be stepping down as president and CEO.

Despite winning the 2013 World Series - their third in a decade - the Red Sox are on their way to their third last-place finish in four seasons.
