J.D. Martinez, Mookie Betts win Silver Slugger Awards

Mookie Betts and J.D. Martinez added some more awards to their trophy cases Thursday when they received American League Louisville Slugger Silver Slugger Awards.

Betts won the award as an outfielder, while Martinez won as both an outfielder and designated hitter to become the first player to ever win two Silver Slugger Awards in one season.

Silver Slugger Award winners are selected by MLB coaches and managers, and the Red Sox tied for the most honors with three winners (between Betts and Martinez), matching the Rockies for the most in the entire league and taking home the most in the American League.

The Red Sox also had three winners in 2005, 2011 and 2016, and have had a representative on the American League's Silver Slugger team in 15 of the last 18 seasons.

Martinez also won the award as an outfielder with the Tigers in 2015, and led the major league in 2018 with 130 RBI and 358 total bases to go along with his .330 average and 43 home runs.

Betts took home his second Silver Slugger Award in his career, with a .346 average and a .640 slugging percentage.
