David Salo is an amazing photographer and he has led an amazing life. His life’s story is as inspirational as it is heartbreaking. David is currently dealing with a stage four brain tumor and there is no cure for the tumor he has.
But David is not giving up. He is currently in an experimental clinical trial at Beth Israel Hospital as he battles and hopes for a positive result.
David was born in Hyannis and grew up on the Cape. He went to Barnstable High School. He has loved photography since he was young. “I always felt spiritual with my camera. When I was walking and hiking near the ocean. It was more of a feeling of being out with my camera. It’s always been more of a connection with me and my camera”
David’s other love growing up was bowling. And he became a very good competitive bowler. “When I was a kid, I thought I was good. I bowled two different 300 games, three 299 games and my shining moment came in a state tournament in Gardner MA in 1998 when I shot a 299. Photography and bowling were always my two ways to get away, no matter what was happening in my life”
Bowling was how he met his wife Suzanne. They met at a bowling tournament in 2005. They became fast friends and began dating. They shared a wonderful life together until she died of cancer in 2008. The next 18 months was the worst time of David’s life. “I was the lowest of lows. There were days I didn’t leave the house, days I didn’t get out of bed. I didn’t know what to do with myself”
But little by little David began to put his life back together and then one day, while he was searching for a photography club that travelled he found the South Shore Camera club. They just happened to be having their first meeting of the year that very night. “it was meant to be” said David. He went to the meeting and met then club president Larry Fay.
Ever since that day, the South Shore Camera Club has been like family for David. They have travelled together and spent lots of time together.
Several years ago, through photography, David met Teresa Oliver. She is an accomplished photographer herself. They met at an open shoot photography event in Rhode Island. They quickly became friends and have been together for several years now.
With what David is dealing with with his health he worries about Teresa and what she is going through because David went through the same situation with his wife Suzanne when she had cancer. “There’s a lot of days I want to be her support” says David. “I know what she’s going through. I’ve been through it.”
“He comforts me” says Teresa. “And I don’t know how he has the strength and ability to do that”
