What does a state of emergency mean for you?

Gov. Charlies Baker has declared a state of emergency in Massachusetts, following the damage the nor'easter has caused up and down the coast of the state.

What does it mean for you?

There is no statewide travel ban in place, though some local municipalities have established one.

The state of emergency allows the governor to authorize executive orders to mee the needs of people during a threat or emergency, overriding existing laws. This may include taking and using property to protecting the state, ordering evacuations, implementing curfews or other restrictions as needed.

What does it mean for the state?

In this case, the governor is using the state of emergency to expedite resources to help with the recovery process, along with allowing the deployment of federal and interstate resources.

The Commonwealth can now request mutual aid from other states to help with the recovery of the storm.

Is there financial assistance?

There is no state relief disaster fund in Massachusetts, though the legislature may vote on a separate distance assistance funding. There is sometimes assistance through FEMA.
