Visitation suspended at West Virginia prison where Whitey Bulger was killed

Visitation at the federal prison in West Virginia where notorious gangster James 'Whitey' Bulger was killed has been suspended until further notice.

The Boston mobster was found unresponsive at USP Hazelton, a high-security prison in West Virginia just a day after he was transferred there. A source told Boston 25 News Bulger had been placed in the general population after arriving at the prison Monday night.

Reports said that Bulger was brutally beaten to death at the prison.

Bulger’s death was the third murder at the Hazelton Correctional Complex in the past seven months, Boston 25 News learned.

“From what I understand, it was a murder,” Rick Heldreth, president of AFGE  Local 420, the union that represents employees at Hazelton, told 25 Investigates. “This is a very violent facility. It always has been.”

Authorities have not disclosed the cause of death, but the FBI is investigating the incident as a homicide.
