Investigators release video of 2017 Waltham fire ruled arson, hoping for tips

WALTHAM, Mass. — A 4-minute surveillance video shows the moments before an apartment building that was still under construction erupted into a 10-alarm fire.

The July 2017 fire at the Elm Street complex in Waltham was declared arson shortly after the fire, but the surveillance video is just now being released.

The video shows what appears to be a person walking around inside the building and then a few minutes later the fire starts.

Investigators have not released a description of the suspect, but they're releasing the video for the first time to put a renewed spotlight on the case.

Several fire departments battled the blaze, which caused about $110-million in damage and destroyed the 264-unit building. No one was injured.

In a joint statement, Waltham Police Chief Keith MacPherson and Waltham Fire Chief Thomas MacInnis said, “We need the community to come forward and help us solve this case. Let us determine what information is important. I want to thank those who have already shared photos and videos of the fire.”

State Fire Marshal Marshal Peter Ostroskey asks anyone with information to contact investigators at 781-314-3550 or the statewide Arson Hotline at 1-800-692-9229.

A $100,000 reward is being offered by the owner and general contractor of the building for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case.
