Video shows NH woman dragging 20-year-old from burning car

WINDHAM, N.H. — A dramatic video shows the moment a 20-year-old woman was rescued from a burning car in New Hampshire this weekend.

The rescuer said she got the woman out just before the rest of the car exploded into flames.

"I'm not going to stand there and watch her burn, not going to watch the car blowup," she Mandi Whitaker explained.
Whitaker lives in Windham, New Hampshire, just steps from where the car burst into flames.

She was recording video on her cell phone when she realized she needed to drag the 20-year-old woman from the burning car.

"I was sleeping on the couch here [and] heard the crash,” she told Boston 25. “I could see the flames coming up over the house over there.”

It happened late Sunday night when Whitaker says she heard a loud noise outside her home on Lowell road.

“I saw the guy standing at the door, six foot flames and he wasn't doing anything,” she explained.

That guy was the driver. Whitaker says she ran to the car to see if anyone was inside and pulled the passenger out of the car.

"She wasn’t responding, looked like her legs were crushed or something. I didn’t know…so I…grabbed her,” Whitaker said.

Police say Nicolas Conte, of Nashua, was the driver and he's been charged with felony DUI.

Whittaker says just a few months ago there was a crash on the same stretch of road and she's working to petition the town to put a stoplight there.

"Not even two months ago they pulled a van out of the water. Ten feet to the left of the accident that just happened," she said. "There has to be a light there. What is it going to take?"

Both the passenger and driver were taken to hospitals in Boston.
