VIDEO: Box truck ignores 'CARS ONLY' sign, enters Storrow Drive

BOSTON — We’ve seen time and time again box trucks having their roofs ripped off like a can of sardines by the notoriously low overpasses of Storrow Drive, so imagine the shock one driver felt when she spotted a box truck ignore a sign stating only cars were allowed to enter the roadway.

Katy, who didn't want to provide her last name, shared a cell phone video she took Thursday morning of a box truck stopping at a "CARS ONLY" sign on a ramp to Storrow Drive. The box truck driver stopped and appeared to question what to do, then hit the gas, hitting the sign while passing by. The five-second video clip doesn't show what happened next.

The stretch of roadway is governed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation. According to DCR, Storrow Drive was built as a parkway which is why trucks and buses are subject to certain restrictions, like height limits. DCR urged all drivers to obey signs along Storrow Drive in order to keep everyone on the roadway safe.

“Truck drivers are reminded that not all tunnels – especially on the river roads – can accommodate vehicles of a certain height, and are urged to be alert for the signs telling them so,” Massachusetts State Police Spokesman Dave Procopio told Boston 25 News.

Procopio also had a reminder for all drivers.

“Of equal importance, drivers are reminded that using a phone to take photos or video while operating a vehicle is a type of distraction, is illegal, and is not safe,” Procopio said.
