SCITUATE, Mass. — Students at an elementary school in Scituate made sure a beloved teacher was sent off in style on her final day before retirement.
Jan Greeley spent 20 years as a paraprofessional in the special education department at Hatherly Elementary School before retiring on February 28.
On her last day, she gave high-fives to students who lined up in the gymnasium, holding flowers and cheering, letting her know just how much they’re going to miss her.
My Mom’s final day and send-off as a teacher at Hatherly Elementary School in Scituate. She spent her career helping kids who needed some extra love and attention, and there could be nobody better for that job. Can’t wait to see her enjoy a well-deserved retirement! pic.twitter.com/6qF3Nq6yRh

“She spent her career helping kids who needed some extra love and attention, and there could be nobody better for that job,” her son, Mike Greeley, posted on Twitter. “Can’t wait to see her enjoy a well-deserved retirement!”
Principal Julie McKillop told Boston 25 News Mrs. Greeley entered the Hatherly community as a mom 32 years ago.
“As a parent volunteer, she shared her nurturing skills with students of Hatherly,” McKillop said.
As her children grew older, Mrs. Greeley became a member of the Hatherly staff.
“In that role, she has touched the lives of so many children who have grown into successful adults,” McKillop added. "Jan was that warm smile that students could count on each morning and the helping hand teachers found to be invaluable.”
Mrs. Greeley tells Boston 25 News she plans to spend her retirement with her family, which includes seven young grandchildren.
