BOSTON — A Marstons Mills man is facing child pornography charges, and authorities say he had files depicting the rape of children as young as five-years-old.
Steven Carme, 30, was charged with one count of receipt and one count of possession of child pornography, the U.S. Attorney's Office said in a statement. He appeared in federal court in Boston after being arrested Wednesday, and was ordered detained pending a detention hearing.
According to court documents, law enforcement learned that an individual whose IP address was traced to Carme’s Marstons Mills residence had shared child pornography over the internet using peer-to-peer sharing software.
Investigators searched his home and seized a laptop computer, an external hard drive and an iPhone X. The external hard drive contained hundreds of images and videos of children, including some that depict the rape of young children, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.
Anyone convicted of receipt of child pornography faces a mandatory minimum sentence of five years and up to 20 years in prison. Anyone convicted of possession of child pornography faces a sentence of no greater than 10 years in prison.
Each charge also provides for a mandatory minimum of five years and up to a lifetime of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000. Sentences are imposed by a federal district court judge.
The investigation and subsequent arrest involved local and federal law enforcement, including representatives from the major crimes unit of U.S. Attorney Andrew Lelling's office, the FBI office in Boston, and Barnstable Police.
