Two people rescued after boat capsizes in Mashpee

Two people were rescued after their boat capsized on the Cape Saturday.

The boat overturned Saturday afternoon in Waquoit Bay in Mashpee, and the victims were standing on the boat when firefighters arrived.

“A wave came over the boat and caused the boat to capsize, the boat actually flipped over," Mashpee Fire Captain Kevin Long said. "The two people were on top of the boat using it as a floatation device."

The two men weren't out on the water for leisure, as Long said they came in Saturday afternoon from East Falmouth to do some end of the season work.

"They were actually pulling moorings," Long said. "Just winter time activity we do here on the Cape."

It took them about 45 minutes from the time their boat flipped over for firefighters to reach them, get them on the fire boat and then to a waiting ambulance.

“One went into the water, the other remarkably was able to kind of walk right over," Long said. "I don’t think he even got his toes wet.”

The victims were brought to shore and evaluated for hypothermia, but didn't go to the hospital.

“Their body temperatures did drop, they were down a couple degrees, it was noticeable," Long said. “In the end, they are very lucky they didn’t get too exposed to the elements there and are spending Christmas with their families.”
