A spokesperson for the Travis County Sheriff’s Office told ESPN that Beard was arrested by police in Austin, Texas, on a third-degree charge of “assault of a family/household member impede breath circulation,” or strangulation.

The Austin Police Department said its officers were called to an urgent call just after 2 a.m. in Tarrytown, where Beard was accused of strangling a person at home, KHOU reported. The alleged victim was not identified.

Online jail records indicate Beard was booked into jail at 5:18 a.m. and do not list any bond available.

The University of Texas said in a statement to KXAN: “The University is aware of the situation regarding Chris Beard. We are continuing to gather information and monitoring the legal process.”

This is Beard’s second year in Texas. Prior to joining the Longhorns, Beard spent five seasons at Texas Tech, and also previously coached at Fort Scott Community College, Seminole State College, McMurry University, Angelo State and Arkansas-Little Rock, the Austin American-Statesman reported.

The Longhorns are scheduled to host Rice on Monday night, and are ranked second overall in The Associated Press poll, ESPN reported. Texas is 7-1 so far this season.
