EATON, Ohio — The granddaughter of a woman who was found dead in a bathtub in November has been charged with her murder.
Heidi Matheny, 35, on Wednesday was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison for killing her 93-year-old grandmother, according to WHIO.
On March 3, Matheny pleaded guilty to a count of murder.
Matheny was arrested in November after Eaton Police Department officers found her grandmother, Alice Matheny, dead in a bathtub, according to the news outlet.
Eaton Police Chief Steve Hurd told WHIO previously that Matheny admitted to investigators that she drowned her grandmother.
Matheny reportedly told investigators that she went behind her grandmother as she was doing the dishes. She held her head under the water, according to a police report obtained by WHIO. She told investigators that she didn’t know if her grandmother was dead so she decided to fill a bathtub and held her under the water for 15 minutes. She ended up leaving her grandmother in the bathtub.
Matheny then walked from her apartment to the Preble County Sheriff’s Office.
Police reportedly asked Matheny what happened before the drowning. According to a police report obtained by WHIO, she said “nothing special, it was a day like any other day”.
Matheny was found competent to stand trial in January after she was ordered to be evaluated in December, according to WHIO.
