More than 600 earthquakes hit area along San Andreas fault since Saturday

A rural area of Southern California near the Mexico border and along the San Andreas fault line saw more than 600 earthquakes in a 24-hour period.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquakes with at least a magnitude 1 and the strongest with a magnitude 5.3 hit the Salton Sea area of the state beginning Saturday and continued until early Sunday.

Geophysicist Randy Baldwin told CNN that 603 temblors shook the area over the weekend.

Four of the quakes measured greater than magnitude 4, and 29 were greater than magnitude 3, according to Baldwin.

According to the USGS map, the quakes were centered near Calipatria, which sits along the San Andreas Fault. The town of 7,710 is about 30 miles north of the Mexican border.
