Georgia beats TCU 65-7 to win 2nd consecutive CFP national championship

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — The University of Georgia beat Texas Christian University 65-7 Monday in the College Football Playoff national championship game.

Georgia has reportedly become college football’s first repeat national champion since Alabama in 2012 and the first back-to-back champion in the CFP era, according to The Associated Press and WSB-TV.

The two best teams in college football played against each other during at SoFi Stadium, but Georgia was overwhelmingly the best squad Monday night. The two teams had met four times before, with Georgia winning all four games.

Make it 5-for-5.

The Bulldogs were explosive on offense this season, according to the AP. And they were just as potent against the Horned Frogs.

According to WSB, an official UGA championship parade will be announced later this week.

This is Georgia’s second consecutive national title and the fourth overall in program history. Georgia previously won national titles in 1942, 1980, and 2021. Early Tuesday, Georgia was named No. 1 in the final Associated Press Top 25 poll early Tuesday.

Monday’s victory allowed Georgia to join Alabama and Clemson with multiple titles in the CFP era. The Crimson Tide won three times, after the 2015, 2018, and 2020 seasons. The Tigers won twice, earning the trophy after the 2016 and 2018 seasons.

Previously, only seven teams have won back-to-back national titles in NCAA history. The Bulldogs came into the game knowing that teams attempting to win back-to-back titles during the CFP era are 0-3.

Georgia erased that negative statistic in a hurry, scoring 38 points in the first half and never looking back.

Georgia’s victory gave the Southeastern Conference its fourth straight national title and the sixth through nine seasons of the CFP format.

Georgia finished the regular season undefeated for the second straight year and won its first SEC championship since 2017. The Bulldogs had the second-best defense in college football during 2022, allowing just 12.8 points per game.

Fun fact: Georgia’s famous mascot, “Uga X,” also known as “Que,” did not make the trip from Athens, Georgia, to Inglewood, California, for the big game, according to The New York Times.

Que, a 9-year-old English bulldog, usually sits in an air-conditioned doghouse during Georgia home games at Sanford Stadium, wearing a Georgia uniform, according to the newspaper. The dog is owned by the family of Frank W. Seiler of Savannah, Georgia. The family told WTOC-TV that the cross-country flight to California would have been too difficult for the dog. Georgia has had a live mascot since 1956.
