Coronavirus: Outbreak in Oklahoma State sorority house infects 23 with COVID-19, forcing quarantine

Twenty-three people in an off-campus sorority house have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, Oklahoma State University officials confirmed Saturday.

The university and Payne County Health Department are monitoring the outbreak at the Pi Beta Phi chapter at Oklahoma State’s Stillwater location and performing contact tracing to “further protect the campus community,” KOCO reported.

“Due to the nature of this situation, the entire chapter house is in isolation or quarantine and will be prohibited from leaving the facility,” the school stated. “One member of the sorority who lives elsewhere is among those who tested positive and will also remain in isolation.”

It was not immediately clear how many individuals are included in the quarantine.

University officials were informed Friday night of the illnesses, citing rapid-antigen tests performed at an off-campus health care facility, NBC News reported.

According to KOCO, a third-party contractor has been hired to disinfect the house and will do so again after the two-week isolation and quarantine period concludes.
