CHICAGO — A Halloween night mass shooting left 14 people injured on Chicago’s West Side, authorities said.
Here are the latest updates:
Child victims in serious condition
Update 12:54 p.m. EDT Nov. 1: Police Supt. David Brown confirmed Tuesday morning that three children – aged 3, 11 and 13 – were among the wounded, noting all three were listed in serious condition. The 11 other victims ranged in age from 31 to 56, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
The drive-by shooting, which was captured on police surveillance video, occurred in East Garfield Park, according to the newspaper.
“We do not have any motive,” Brown stated during a news conference, reiterating that investigators are searching for two suspects.
“We always worry about retaliation obviously, but we don’t know enough about this, whether it involved a gang conflict or some personal conflict yet, but as soon as we know we’ll share that with the public,” Brown said. “And obviously we’re deploying extra police resources in the area to make sure that we can prevent any retaliation if that’s something that’s real.”
Meanwhile, a woman struck by a car while trying to escape the chaos was listed in fair condition with scrapes to her body, the Sun-Times reported.
In a statement posted to Twitter, Mayor Lori Lightfoot called the attack “another tragic display of gun violence by cowards indiscriminately shooting into a crowd.”

“The shooters had no concerns for the lives of the adults and children impacted, but I am calling on people of goodwill who have information, to come forward,” Lightfoot wrote.

Original report: According to WLS-TV and WBBM-TV, the drive-by shooting happened about 9:30 p.m. Monday near the intersection of Polk Street and California Avenue. Chicago police superintendent David Brown said video from the scene showed at least two suspects opening fire “randomly” from a vehicle into a crowd on the corner, striking up to 14 people.

The victims, who suffered non-life-threatening to critical injuries, included three children, ages 3, 11 and 13, the news outlets reported. A car also struck someone in the crowd, Brown said.
Brown added that investigators have not determined a motive or arrested anyone in connection with the incident, according to the news outlets. Although some members of the crowd had gathered for a vigil, the shooting did not appear to be linked to the event, Brown said.
No further details, including descriptions of the suspects and vehicle, were immediately available.
