According to KSAZ and KTVK, the incident occurred about 9:30 p.m. Friday during a food truck event on Guadalupe Road. Someone in a silver or white SUV, possibly a Kia Soul, drove by and began firing into the crowd, striking three adults and four children, ages 16, 9, 6 and 1, Mesa police said.
A food vendor shot back at the SUV, which fled the scene, authorities said. Investigators have not determined whether the vehicle was struck, KTVK reported. They also have not released a suspect’s name or description.
Emergency crews rushed the injured 1-year-old boy to a nearby hospital, where he died Sunday, according to the news outlets.
