Tree crushes car with 4-year-old inside

MILTON, Mass. — A caretaker and a 4-year-old child were inside a car when it was crushed by a tree in Milton.

A High Wind Warning across Massachusetts has left a trail of damage and tens of thousands of power outages.

Among the damage, a tree in Milton that came toppling down, onto a vehicle on Randolph Avenue.

Milton Police posted about the incident Monday afternoon stating that Randolph Avenue between Brook Road and Adams Street would be closed during the evening commute due to the high winds bringing down a tree. The tree also caused damage to a utility pole and power lines to come down.

But this story would be completely different if that tree had fallen just a few inches another way. It turns out, despite all of the damage caused, the tree landed on a beam or bar that supports the car's windshield and that prevented it from crushing the occupants.

Still, firefighters had to use the jaws of life. The 4-year-old child was unharmed and the adult caretaker suffered minor injuries to her neck and back.

The Deputy Fire Chief says the incident was due to a rotted tree and high winds.

A nearby preschool was put in a shelter-in-place mode due to the high voltage power lines that were taken down. No one was hurt and hours later, parents arrived to pick up their children.

The High Wind Warning is set to expire at 7 p.m. Monday.
