Traffic a concern as grand opening of Encore Boston Harbor nears

EVERETT, Mass. — We're now only a week away from the projected opening of Encore Boston Harbor in Everett, and increased traffic in the area is a big concern for local leaders.

The casino received final approval earlier this week, but Boston Mayor Marty Walsh said he is still concerned about the big increase in traffic after the Everett casino opens its doors.

"We're going to monitor very closely once it opens up to see what type of traffic situations we're going to have out there," Walsh said. "It's a very complicated area right now with the North Washington Street Bridge being under construction."

Another concern -- the casino has less than 3,000 parking spots to accommodate visitors.

Walsh said he's worried people in Charlestown won't be able to get into or out of their neighborhoods.

The casino said it strongly encourages people to use public transportation once it opens its doors on June 23.
