Topsfield woman found with gunshot wound to the chest

TOPSFIELD, Mass. - A woman was found by police and fire officials inside a Topsfield home suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest on Saturday afternoon.

Topsfield fire officials responded to a call at around 4:30 p.m. for a person shot on Juniper Lane.

Police and paramedics also assisted at the scene, where they found a conscious and alert 64-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to the chest, according to police

Police said a relative was also inside the home at the time of the shooting and was not injured.

Police said this shooting was random, adding that the shot was fired from outside the house and hit the woman who was inside.

Paul Farrell, who grew up in Topsfield, said it's rare to hear about a shooting in this nice, quiet town.

"Yeah this is unnerving, you know home is where the heart is, home is everything, but it would not surprise me if there's some underlying motive behind this," said Farrell. "I would like to know what’s going on, you’d like to feel safe in your town."

The victim was transported to Beverly Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and later flown to Brigham and Women's in Boston. She is expected to survive.

The shooting remains under investigation. No arrests have been made.
