Thief makes out of Kay Jewelers in Somerville with $30K in watches

SOMERVILLE, Mass. — A thief was caught on camera stealing $30,000 in watches from the Kay Jewelers at Assembly Row before hopping on a train and getting away.

The brazen theft, which happened during the day, was caught on multiple surveillance cameras, both inside and outside the store.

According to Somerville Police, the man, seen in the footage wearing a hat and sunglasses, handed the store manager a bag before discreetly flashing a .45 caliber handgun.

"Anyone who knows him can easily recognize him," said Robert Siciliano, a security expert with Hotspot Shield. "Looks like he’s pointing it out to the jewelry owner. [He says] 'See my gun,' and he’s keeping it tight so he doesn't cause alarm via the other store patrons. It looks like he might have it pressed up against the glass."

Once the manager fills the bag, the man speeds off on foot and hops onto an orange line train at the Assembly station.

"I considered this a well-traveled, safe area so its actually pretty concerning someone out and about all different times of the day here," said Christine Gerb, who lives at an Assembly Row apartment building.
