The Big E beefs up security measures this year

The Big E is beefing up security measures this year, using metal detectors for the first time.

The festival in West Springfield, which runs from Sept. 13 to 29, has set up 25 metal detectors for guests and vendors to walk through before making their way in to the fairgrounds, according to Western Mass News.

Cliff Hedges, the director of public safety, says the decision was made in the aftermath of the recent mass shootings across the country.

"We're looking for any kind of weapon that might try to come through," Hedges said.

"I still want to keep the feel of the fair, but I think a lot of people, with all of the things that have happened this year in different venues, will appreciate a little bit more of a sense of security," Hedges continued.

Officials added more security cameras and a new zip tie policy to show that bags have been checked and cleared.

Security will also have a bird's-eye view of the grounds with cameras located on towers.
