(FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - At least one of the victims killed when Wade Michael Page allegedly opened fire at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin on Sunday had ties to Massachusetts.
Not only had Satwant Kaleka helped build the Sikh temple where Sunday's fatal shooting occurred, but Kaleka had also served as the president of the temple for quite some time.
Page, a 40-year-old Army veteran and former leader of a white supremacist heavy metal band, allegedly shot and killed six people at the temple in an act of domestic terrorism.
Gursher Gill said Kaleka, his uncle-in-law, had done many great things for the community and his loss will be felt in Wisconsin and Massachusetts. Gill is married to Simmer Nagra whose uncle is Kaleka.
Gill and Nagra are members of the New England Sikh Study Circle in Milford. The community has a large Sikh population.
Gill told FOX 25 that his family heard that Kaleka died protecting other members of the Wisconsin temple.
President Malkit Gill says the temple attack is an attack on America's founding principal of freedom from religious persecution.
Members of the tight-knit Sikh community believe that the only way to overcome and heal from the tragedy is through education.
Sikhism is the fifth largest faith in the world.
