Suspect hospitalized, charged after trooper-involved shooting in Brockton

BROCKTON, Mass. — A Fall River man is facing numerous charges and remained hospitalized Saturday after being shot by a State Police trooper in Brockton, authorities said.

Claude W. Brown-Madison, 25, was armed and pointed a gun at the trooper moments before the police-involved shooting, Massachusetts State Police spokesman Dave Procopio said in a statement.

Brown-Madison was shot in the lower body and remained hospitalized Saturday night at Boston Medical Center under State Police guard. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Police recovered Brown-Madison's gun at the scene of the shooting, Procopio said.

Authorities charged Brown-Madison with armed assault with intent to murder, assault by means of a dangerous weapon, committing a firearm violation while having a record that includes at least three prior violent or drug crimes, unlawfully possessing a firearm, and possessing a firearm and/or ammunition without an FID card.

The trooper, who was not identified, fired his gun around 9 a.m. Saturday during a confrontation with Brown-Madison on Colonel Bell Drive, and what led to that confrontation remains under investigation,  Procopio said.

After the trooper shot Brown-Madison, he placed him into custody and rendered first aid.

The trooper has been placed on five days of standard administrative leave, per State Police policy for troopers involved in a shooting. The trooper was also evaluated at Good Samaritan Medical Center and released.

Due to a potential appearance of a conflict of interest, the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office has referred dual parts of the case to the offices of two other district attorneys in Massachusetts.

The Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office will oversee the investigation of the shooting, to determine whether the use of potentially lethal force was justified.

The Essex County District Attorney’s Office will prosecute Brown-Madison on the charges he is facing.

Brown-Madison will be arraigned once he is medically cleared, Procopio said.
