Study: Massachusetts doesn't have the worst drivers in the country

BOSTON — Drivers in Massachusetts have a certain reputation, but according to a new study from smartasset, drivers in the Bay State aren't even close to being the worst in the country.

In fact, Vermont is the only state in the top 25 for worst drivers, coming in at number seven.

Florida, known for sunny beaches and retirement homes, takes the number one spot.

Smartasset's study analyzed data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on the number of drivers, OUI arrests, percentage of drivers with insurance and several other factors.

Following Florida, the states with the worst drivers are Mississippi, Oklahoma, New Jersey and Delaware.

Despite all of this, smartasset's own post about the survey mentioned the reputation of Massachusetts drivers.

"It is also a common occurrence on American highways for people in near-accidents, to look at the license plate of the near-accident-causer and think to themselves, “Oh, well of course they’re from Massachusetts,'" the company said.

So where did Massachusetts end up?

"Boston drivers usually have a reputation as bad drivers but the numbers we analyzed don’t bear that out. Massachusetts ranks 48 on our list," the company said.
