BOSTON — A fire at a South End apartment killed a mother Saturday morning.
"I lived in this building for 9 years and she was my neighbor and I saw her every day with her daughter," said Mirlene.
Boston Fire responded to 109 East Canton St. for a fire in a third floor apartment around 6:15 a.m. Firefighters found the body of the woman in the bathroom.
Fire officials said a man and young girl woke up after hearing the alarms and were able to escape without any serious injuries. Neighbors said it was the woman’s husband and daughter.
"It was a lot of smoke. I could not see nothing at all," said upstairs neighbor Angelisa.
Investigators believe the fire started in the bathroom area and spread into the apartment, but firefighters were able to extinguish it before it spread.
The exact cause is still under investigation. The victim was known by everyone in the building as a great person.
Boston Fire officials estimated the damage to be at $100,000.
