Sofia's Angels: the gift of giving begins to spread

This time of year, we see depiction of angels everywhere. But have you ever seen a real angel?

We met a woman whose random acts of kindness have more and more people believing in angels among us.

Her name is Cathy O'Grady. Her mission is to keep homeless people warm on a cold day. On Boston Common, she gives out jackets, gloves, and blankets - all of them new.

"I'm constantly thinking about them. It's constant if I'm out shopping for myself or for Christmas or anything else. I can just see, for a split second, hope in their eyes that people do care about them. they are somebody's mother, son, father. they mean something to somebody," O'Grady said.

Cathy doesn't do the work alone, she created a foundation named after her mother called Sofia's Angels to help.

Sometimes the group will leave blankets on a park bench for anyone who needs them, but most of the time the effort is all about one on one contact.

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) - Sofia's Angels has also started helping people put presents under the tree. Cathy and her angels paid off nearly $10,000 worth of layaway items at Toys R Us in Framingham and Auburn.

"These families are obviously struggling and putting things on lay away. I'm able to help them. So there's never enough to do. There's always more to do," O'Grady said.

She says she wants the recipients of everything from blankets to toys to know that they are loved and they are special.

Her random acts of kindness are now being down in Sofia's name by others all around the world. At the beginning, she wanted to remain anonymous, but now the word is out, and others are helping.

"It's a very fine line. I did it for awhile, not letting people know, and then, when I saw it motivated people. I decided I was going to cross that fine line and share," O'Grady said.

She added it was also a way to share her mother with the world.
