Snowbank near crash spot removed 1 day after child hit in Quincy

QUINCY, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- One day after a 5th grade student was hit by an MBTA bus after coming out from behind a huge snow bank, snow still clogs many streets and sidewalks in that Quincy neighborhood even as the city's mayor says crews are working around the clock to remove it.

FOX25 has learned that a preliminary investigation by MBTA police indicates that a 5th grade student bolted from behind a huge snow bank and ran into the bus Wednesday. He suffered lacerations and a possible broken nose.

Area parents are of course concerned.

"It just needs to be safe for us for the kids to go to school, us go to work, just piece of mind," one parent said.

Residents who live on Water Street say snow banks are always an issue after big storms.

“The city will not plow this unless somebody dies or gets hurt," one resident said.

One day after that boy was hurt, the snow bank was gone. And Mayor Thomas Koch stands by his public works crews who are working day and night, even as another storm is on the horizon.

“I can guarantee this, we'll continue to have available pieces of equipment out there to make conditions as safe as possible,” Koch said.

Another point to remember is that in Quincy, unlike Boston and many other local cities, there is no ordinance that requires residents to remove snow from sidewalks. There is one for businesses, but in an area where there's a mix of both it can be tricky to navigate sidewalks in the middle of winter.
