Siblings killed after car crashes into Framingham pond

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com ) A brother and sister were killed early Sunday morning, when the car they were in crashed and overturned in a Framingham pond a few miles from home.

First-responders found the bodies of the 21-year-old man and 25-year-old woman in the two-door Honda Accord in the pond in front of Framingham Country Club.

The girlfriend of the brother, a 21-year-old woman, survived the crash and waited for help for hours as hypothermia set in, officials said. Her boyfriend initially survived the crash, but later died in the submerged car.

"The man was with her in the air pocket at one point, and then he said... he was going to open the door," said Framingham Fire Captain Mark Leporati. "He went down under the water to open the door and never returned."

A golfer first saw the submerged car from the parking lot of the country club around 7 a.m., and called for help. Crews were not initially aware anyone was inside the vehicle.

"One of the firefighters heard someone calling for help. So now it went into a completely different mode of operation. We had a rescue going on with a viable patient," Leporati said. "They were talking to her. She was trapped in the back with an air pocket."

Divers assisted with an air tank ready on the chance the woman lost her small air pocket. Firefighters got into the trunk of the car and cut through the back seat to rescue her.

The woman was flown to a Boston hospital to be treated for hypothermia. She told investigators the three had been returning from a party in Hudson when they crashed.

"She estimated it was about 4:30 in the morning when they went into the water. They left Gates Road, missed a little building there, struck a tree and then rolled," Leporati said. "That's what caused the car to roll and be inverted in the water."

As investigators began piecing together what caused the crash on Sunday afternoon, friends and family left flowers at the pond.

"Beautiful people. Hard working. Very family oriented,"said friend Christopher Skinner, who has known the siblings since he was in middle school. "Just sad. They're gone way too soon. They're going to be missed."

Skinner said the deceased man leaves behind a young son.

The survivor is expected to make a full recovery.

One firefighter needed stitches on his hand after cutting himself during the extrication.
