Sheriff: Man accused of raping, killing 11-year-old niece attacked in jail

LAWRENCE, Mass. — A Lawrence man charged in connection with the death of an 11-year-old girl is now in solitary confinement in jail.

Authorities say Miguel Rivera was beaten by fellow inmates at the Essex County Jail Tuesday.

The sheriff says he had some bumps and bruises but was already released from the infirmary.

The attack reportedly took place after rivera was arraigned on a new charge of rape.

The is also accused of drugging the young girl before she died.

Sheriff Kevin F. Coppinger released the following statement:

"Miguel Rivera, an inmate at the Middleton House of Corrections, was involved in an altercation on Tuesday evening at approximately 8:30pm. Correctional officers moved quickly to break up the fight. Mr. Rivera sustained some bumps, bruises and a small cut. He was treated and released from our infirmary. Mr. Rivera has been placed in protective custody and will be held in a single cell and will have no interaction with other inmates.  Four inmates were involved in the incident and our Special Investigation Unit will review what happened and will consult with the District Attorney’s Office on possible charges."
