Several trips to Martha's Vineyard were canceled Wednesday morning due to a mechanical failure on the ferry.
According to the Steamship Authority, the M/V Martha's Vineyard and the M/V Woods Hole are out of service Wednesday - causing the company to cancel or change a large number of vehicle reservations.
The ferry travels between Martha's Vineyard and Woods Hole.
The cancellation left many passengers stranded.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Steamship Authority posted a travel advisory stating a breaker in the electrical panel needs to be replaced. They expected the breaker will be delivered Thursday, installed and tested in time for the Coast Guard to inspect and conduct sea trials in the morning.
High-speed passenger service between Woods Hole and Vineyard Haven will be provided with SeaStreak's M/V Whaling City Express. Due to the recent issues, the Steamship Authority chartered the express through Monday.

All of M/V Martha's Vineyard trips Wednesday - as well as the Thursday 6 a.m. trip from Vineyard Haven - are canceled.
"As many of you already know, we regretfully have had to cancel or change a large number of vehicle reservations. As a result, we are currently not able to allow any vehicles to travel on a standby basis from either Vineyard Haven or Woods Hole, except for medical emergencies.
We advise all our customers traveling today to call our Reservation Office at 508-477-8600 to check the status of their vehicle reservations.
As before, we apologize for all of disruptions to our customers' lives and businesses that have been caused by these events, and we will provide updates as more information becomes available."
This is the latest of several issues the Steamship Authority has had with ferries breaking down.
Seventy-two passengers were stranded for five hours last week after a ferry lost power off the coast of Martha's Vineyard.
The company issued an apology on its website, and said it will provide updates as they become available.
