What may have been the longest snake ever recorded was captured Thursday in Malaysia. Construction workers building a flyover spotted the lengthy reptile under a fallen tree and called in Malaysia's Civil Defense Force to capture it. It took them 30 minutes to bind the snake's mouth shut. The Civil Defense Force released images of dozens of people carrying the snake.
Herme Herisyam, the official who caught the snake, told The Guardian over the phone, "It is 8 [meters] in length and weighs about 250 kg." That translates to 26 feet and 551.16 pounds.
Medusa, the 7.67-meter reticulated python kept in Kansas City, holds the record for longest measured snake, according to The Guinness Book of World Records.
The recently captured Malaysian snake was set to be transferred to the government's Department of Wildlife but died Sunday after laying one egg, the BBC reports.
An official claimed the capture and ensuing attention probably compounded the stress of laying eggs and contributed to the snake's death.
