CONCORD, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com/AP) - Massachusetts State Police dive teams have concluded their search of Walden Pond for the swimmer last seen Sunday evening and will resume their search Tuesday morning.
Authorities said the 63-year-old Lincoln man was swimming with his wife and another woman when the two women decided to try to swim across the pond. It wasn't clear if the man was trying to swim across as well.
He was reported missing at about 6:45 p.m. Sunday. State police, officers from the Department of Conservation and Recreation, local police and fire departments searched for him for about three hours.
The search will resume at 8 a.m. Tuesday, and the pond will remain closed until further notice.
Police spokesman David Procopio said divers will use side-scan Sonar and a police boat in the search. Officers will also search the banks of the pond to see if the swimmer may have gotten out.
Procopio said the pond floor in the search area is covered in several feet of muck, limiting visibility. Officials said the water temperature was in the 50s near the shore and colder toward the center.
Walden Pond, made famous by philosopher and poet Henry David Thoreau, is about 100 feet deep in the center. The pond was closed Monday.
